Technical Guide: Spring Collet and Guide Bush Selection & Maintenance for STAR Swiss CNC Lathe
Spring collets and guide bushes are the most critical clamping components of STAR swiss CNC lathes. Their precision and working status directly determine workpiece roundness, surface roughness and dimensional stability. Improper selection, wrong installation or lack of maintenance will cause workpiece chatter marks, dimensional deviation, bar scratching and early wear of accessories. This technical guide introduces selection principles, installation operations, daily maintenance and typical fault analysis for the StarUser series collets and carbide guide bushes used on STAR SB, SR, SV, SE and KNC series lathes.
1. Selection Rules of Collet and Guide Bush
First of all, the inner diameter of the collet and guide bush must match the raw bar diameter. The gap between bar and guide bush should be controlled within a reasonable range. Too large a gap leads to bar swing and poor machining precision; too small a gap causes bar jamming and excessive friction heat. For soft materials like copper and aluminum, standard spring steel collets are suitable. When machining stainless steel, titanium alloy and hard alloy bars, carbide lined guide bushes are recommended for better wear resistance. Choose the 0.005mm high-precision grade for medical, electronic and micro-component processing; standard 0.008–0.01mm precision is enough for general mechanical parts to save cost.
2. Correct Installation Steps
Before installation, fully clean the spindle taper hole, collet outer surface and guide bush inner hole. Remove cutting chips, oil dirt and tiny metal debris, because even fine particles can damage the fitting surface and reduce clamping accuracy. Put the collet into the spindle nut evenly and avoid forced knocking. After assembly, perform idle running inspection and test clamping with a raw bar, then check whether the bar shakes under high rotation speed. Make sure the coolant flow path is unblocked to take away cutting heat during continuous production and prevent thermal deformation of small precision parts.
3. Daily Maintenance and Storage
Clean the collet and guide bush after finishing production every day, wiping off cutting fluid and metal powder. Apply anti-rust oil before storage and place them in separated plastic boxes to prevent collision. Avoid dropping or heavy extrusion, which will lead to permanent deformation. Regularly check the inner hole surface for scratches, cracks and elastic fatigue, and replace the collet in time if clamping force drops obviously. The carbide guide bush liner is brittle, so avoid strong impact during disassembly to prevent cracking.
4. Common Faults & Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Solution |
| Workpiece chatter marks | Collet wear, large gap of guide bush | Replace worn collet or guide bush, check bar tolerance |
| Scratches on bar surface | Inner hole debris or carbide liner crack | Clean or replace the guide bush |
| Unstable dimension batch by batch | Elastic fatigue of spring collet | Replace with a new high-precision collet |
Collets and guide bushes are consumable parts with limited service life. Regular inspection and standardized maintenance can prolong service life and reduce the reject rate. All StarUser spare parts are manufactured and inspected following strict quality standards, ensuring stable performance under high-speed machining.
